Everything you need to know about IT/OT Convergence

IT/OT convergence is no longer optional for process industries, but it remains one of the hardest programmes to execute well. This whitepaper explains what IT/OT convergence actually involves, where information technology and operational technology genuinely overlap, why the two domains evolved as separate silos, and what has to change technically and organisationally before converged data delivers value.

The paper opens by contrasting the two domains: IT systems built for data-centric computing, rapid refresh cycles and enterprise networking, versus OT systems built to monitor and control physical processes on equipment that stays in service for decades. It then works through the Purdue Model as the reference architecture for ICS network segmentation, walking level by level from Level 0 process equipment and Level 1 basic control, through Level 2 area supervisory control and Level 3 site operations, up to the Level 3.5 industrial DMZ and the Level 4–5 enterprise zone. The Level 3.5 DMZ is treated as a direct outcome of convergence: the buffer where firewalls and proxies moderate bidirectional data flows between OT and IT.

From there the whitepaper covers the three convergence categories - process, software and data, and physical - and the benefits organisations pursue: direct control and monitoring from anywhere, better decision-making from real-time converged data, improved visibility and responsiveness, and reduced unplanned downtime. It gives equal weight to the barriers: cultural distance between IT and OT teams, one-way edge devices that cannot accept inbound management traffic, non-standard OT protocols incompatible with IT networks, scalability limits when edge data volumes overwhelm IT infrastructure, and cybersecurity exposure from legacy OT hardware engineered with minimal security consideration.

The closing sections turn practical. Integration Objects recommends starting from a clear organisational objective and a convergence roadmap that defines roles and responsibilities before tool selection, then adopting an integration platform that consolidates multiple IT and OT data sources into a single common format securely. SIOTH® (Smart IoT Highway) is presented as that platform, with an architecture diagram spanning OT assets, the DMZ communication and cyber security backbone, and enterprise systems, plus its core capabilities: OT/IT data exchange, built-in cyber security, high availability and scalable architecture, a flexible data model, orchestration and synchronisation, Unified HMI, and flexible user management.
